The Project
Standguide’s Ethnic Minority Outreach Project is a person centred support service that is delivered primarily, but not exclusively, within the Manchester wards of Ardwick, Cheetham Hill, Hulme, Longsight, Levenshulme, Moss Side, Whalley Range and Clifford. As an outreach service, the Project Team is working closely within the community with individuals from a wide range of ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds in order support and assist them to overcome personal barriers that restrict access to employment and training opportunities.
Funded by Jobcentre Plus, this is a free service to our customers and additional financial support can also be accessed through the provision to cover items such as travel and childcare expenses.
Working closely with a wide range of external organisations and support agencies, our aim is to strengthen the support available to those ethnic minority Jobseekers who require assistance in making the transition into employment by providing them with direct jobsearch skills and tools such as CVs and interview techniques.
In addition to delivering our services within the community, we have six centres across Central Manchester where customers can receive Jobsearch support, skills for life training, and access to all of Standguide’s in-house certificated courses. Whilst our main focus is to match customers as early as possible to suitable vacancies, we have built in the additional support that may be needed along the way, which is tailored to meet the needs of the individual and their progression speed.
On commencement, each customer will have at least two interviews with the Career Coach to establish:
· Career ideas
· Education, training and work history, skills analysis and level of ability
· An assessment of career and job families; to best match career ideas and realism in terms of opportunities available, training and qualifications required and the individuals personal drive and capacity to develop.
· Completion of an Individual Action Plan that will clearly set out goals and direction agreed, stages (with target dates) to achieving goals
This will lead to appointments being made with a Standguide Careers Guidance Officer and with a Skills for Life Tutor who will conduct a Diagnostic Analysis to identify language, literacy and numeracy needs.
